Concerning women’s dress in Islam - There is a very telling statement in the Qur’an which can easily clear the matter of whether Muslim women are required to wear the hiijab, or also the face veil.
In the chapter, The Confederates, we read, in verse 53:
“When you ask the wives of the Prophet for anything, ask them from behind a curtain. That will be purer for your hearts as well as their hearts.”
This instructed the Sahaba to ask for their needs, or things which a person or visitor to the Prophet’s household might want ordinarily to ask for/about, such as the location of something, a need, etc. from behind a curtain. Therefore, they were instructed to ask from behind the hiijab (any screen, covering or veil which prevents exposure of the women, in their ordinary dress).
The reasons given are purity of hearts of the guests, as well as of the Prophet’s wives.
Therefore, even though the Prophet’s wives are like “mothers of the believers”, they were protected by the hiijab from impure thoughts or intentions. Allah knows best why this verse was revealed, its interpretation and meaning.
While Muslims are exhorted always to strive in their religion and take the Prophet’s example as the best example, and a way of life; women can also properly take the Prophet’s wives, our “mothers” in Islam, as role models.
Therefore, contrary to what some people say, or would like us to believe, the Muslim women have every right to strive in the ‘way’, by not only emulating the Prophet, SAWS, in his actions, but to also emulate the way of the early women of Islam, the Sahabiyat, and especially this means following what the “mothers of the believers” (the Prophet Muhammad’s wives), Allah be pleased with them, did,
If a woman is required to stay behind a curtain while male guests are present, then, isn’t it equally necessary that she should cover her body, and even the face, when going about her business out of doors? And Allah knows best.
